What is a content delivery network?
A content delivery network places copies of content closer to the people who request it, so pages, files and media travel a shorter path. For a business site that is the difference between a page that waits and a page that opens.
The same idea shows up inside cloud computing. Capacity is useful only if people can reach it without a long, fragile hop across the public internet. A shorter path is also easier to watch for performance.
Cloud exchange
A cloud exchange lets an enterprise connect with cloud service providers without sending all of that traffic over the public internet. The usual path is a dedicated physical connection in a meet-me facility, such as a data centre.
That private path matters for security as well as speed. Less of the organisation’s traffic sits on a route shared with everyone else, and the connection can be treated as part of the systems that are monitored.
Cloud metrics
Cloud metrics are the logs a cloud infrastructure or application generates. Organisations use that record to detect, monitor and respond to changes in cost, security and performance.
A rise in cost, a failed sign-in, or a service that has slowed are all visible in the same kind of record. Supervision of the IT infrastructure depends on those measures staying in line with the organisation’s goals, rather than on a report written after the fault.
Cloud marketplace
A cloud marketplace is an application marketplace, in the same family as a SaaS marketplace. Customers use an online storefront to find, buy and manage cloud-based applications.
The storefront does not replace a decision about fit. An application still has to work with the existing sign-in, the backup copies and the security already in place. Scalable technology is only useful if the new tool still behaves when the number of users changes.
